Bruce is a master Conflict Navigator and creator of the toolkit upon which REAL Solutions learning programs are based.
After years in social services, Bruce became known as an innovative leader in partnering and programs, able to work closely with some of the most conflicted people in the streets of Toronto. As Executive Director of Operation Go Home, an agency that supported and reconnected over 5000 homeless youth and their families, Bruce’s work was recognized by government leaders, partners, students and clients for his ability to transform and engage potential in individuals, teams and communities. His work is appreciated for uncanny effectiveness in improving values-based management and achievement of complex objectives.
He is especially proud of his efforts finding the deep connections within families and organizations that had previously been considered irreparably fractured.
Bruce’s unique and powerfully simple approach to building effective programs at Operation Go Home led to passion for learning and a most prized personal achievement: integrating educational programming into efforts to lead and guide workers, students and volunteers whose efforts directly benefited hard-to-serve youth and adults. He pioneered and helped establish the practice of cross-training Social Service and Child and Youth Workers to expand their competency profile and include fund raising and administrative skills that are critical to the well-being of social service organizations.
Bruce’s work has brought together diverse groups: agencies, governments and communities whose work together toward a common good included the City of Toronto, Human Resources Development Canada, Sony Canada and a host of other education, social service and community agencies. Bruce was a key founder and designers of the “Message Home” video partnership with BlockBuster and Sony Canada.
Bruce is a keynote speaker for service clubs and symposiums that have welcomed his warmth, dynamic personality and extensive knowledge of contemporary approaches within the conflict management and coaching fields.
A scholar-practitioner, his research, entitled ” Stone Mapping: Helping Workers Find Ways through Workplace Conflict” began Bruce’s exploration of new means of blending goal achievement and conflict management competency development. Early innovations in conflict management included simple and effective tools including Responsibility Coaching™ (2004), the Conflict Spinner™ (2006), the Turning Point
Conflict Coaching Model (2003), and 10k’s Con~Flicks™: a collaborative web-based learning program that uses video clips and Hollywood movies to promote comfort in learning about conflict (2007). These are now incorporated into a highly advanced Conflict Coaching model, “Conflict Navigation” – along with a holistic competency development program for conflict coaching practitioners and organizations interested in developing a coaching culture.
Bruce’s continued efforts include the development of coaching programs and tools for organizations and individuals. Most recently, his academic work is building on his certification in adult education, blended learning and ADR, and he is pursuing additional post-graduate studies with a keen focus on giving the simplest of tools and skills to permit those in conflict to work effectively through resolutions on their own.
Bruce, The Conflict Navigator, keeps us up to date with his blog about connecting the dots in his own work and life here.
Bruce’s family and work-life balance are his pride and joy – learning, fitness, people, joy, and an addiction to coffee and film sustain him personally.
