Our blended coaching programs and expertise can be customized to meet unique organizational needs.  Our programs have been integrated with training and leadership programs, recruitment, and performance management.

Coaching can correct speed orientation, onboarding, alignment and learning and development, but frequently today, it is seen as a means of support for high performance leaders. In fact, a 2004 survey notes that 86 percent of companies used coaching to sharpen the skills of individuals who have been identified as future organizational leaders.   We have worked with:

  • executives
  • managers and management boards/teams
  • project leaders
  • new hires (leader orientation and onboarding)
  • conflict management intervention (other ombuds, mediators, counsel and internal coaches)

Our coaches meet regularly with their clients to provide valuable feedback and perspective which can be impossibly hard to get… especially in the middle of an issue, challenge, or at the executive level. Team or group coaching is a based upon a contact plan that establishes a practical and consistent set of interactions between the coach and team and its individual members.  The program begins with an extended foundation session, followed by regular team observation (“shadow” coaching), focused feedback and skill enhancement workshops as needed.

What is a Coach?

A coach is trained professional, completely focused on supporting and eliminating barriers to success. Sounds simple, and it is: you have friends, family, mentors, teams and others behind you, but time with a coach is a completely different investment of time directed entirely towards you.  If you’ve never experienced a coaching conversation, it can be easily be one of the most profound and eye-opening 30-60 minute discussions you will ever have.  Often just one session will allow you to understand how  it feels.

Contact between sessions may be done through email at no charge for brief check-ins (and certainly for celebration!) regarding completion of agreed upon goals. Longer time spent responding to emails are prorated at the above rate agreed upon in advance.

What is Coaching?

Most coaching clients have specific goals they want to make progress towards. We address both the challenge and pleasure in making plans and achieving them in that context. What do you want to achieve? Where are you getting stuck? What or who has you muddled/frustrated/angry? What/who needs to be improved in order for you to make progress? That’s what we work on.
These can arise both at work and in life.  These arise with people who are distant or those who are closest to you.  These happen for smart – even brilliant – people: even those who are otherwise known and respected for resolving issues for either themselves or others.

The only things that are off limits are those that would be more appropriately addressed with therapy.

What is Conflict Coaching?

Conflict coaching is a specialized, advanced form of coaching in which the coach has extensive knowledge and experience with conflict analysis, management, mediation and facilitation. A partnership where the coach and the client work together to build understanding, address support, and gain power, confidence and calm with proven technique, structure, accountability and ability to get to the bottom of any issue, the client brings a strong desire to change and a willingness to take action.

What areas of concern can be addressed in coaching?

Conflict coaching can be either holistic (on the whole person) or on the issue at hand at different turns.  The process targets needs, preferences, values, and style and the client stays in charge but gains perspective, strength and clarity. Conflict keeps you from happiness – it costs… a lot.

Conflict coaching practitioners and clients know to ask, “what is it worth to have peace, resolution and agreement?”

How many times have you been kept up, or been stressed, frustrated, stuck or really angry about what has happened to you or others?  Do you know how to connect the dots?  It can be really hard to figure out the exact steps you need to take to reconnect with what is really possible, what you really want, need or can do.  People in conflict are ‘stuck in the middle’.  Your Conflict Coach will work to help you fully understand how your circumstance and resolution can affect you, help you create a plan, and help you navigate it.

Why choose a coach with advanced training?

Anyone can call themselves a coach – the field is not regulated. A advanced training and credentialing is a good way to make sure a coach you might want to hire has the qualifications to be able to help you. You are wise to ensure the coach has obtained a high level of skill, knowledge, and experience, and has passed rigorous examinations by credentialing organizations.

How does Conflict Coaching work?

The Conflict Coaching partnership is flexible, but always includes four components: discovery, regular sessions, check-ins, and email support.  Discovery is name we use for the initial session where we get to know each other and the coaching relationship is defined. We discuss what you want to achieve, where things stand now, and start to identify long term goals. A typical discovery session lasts about 90 minutes for a prolonged coaching program, but can be much shorter for an issue-specific or ‘laser’ session of conflict coaching (e.g., for a specific issue).

Regular sessions are typically no more than 40 minutes (can be as short as just a few minutes, depending on the client) several times per month. They can be conducted face to face or over the telephone. This is where we get into the details of what’s behind the issues you’re facing and how to solve them. We’ll develop systems, devise strategies, work on skills, and talk about what’s working and what can be improved. Action items are considered, so you know exactly what you can do next.

Check-ins are sometimes part of the coaching process. You’re welcome to send your coach a status update every step of the way so you’re sure you’re on track between sessions.

E-mail support is available if you need help on a specific issue between sessions.

How long will I need coaching?

The duration of Conflict Coaching depends on your goals, motivation, and progress, among other things. Some people hire a Conflict Coach for a specific project, others stay in coaching for years.
The ultimate goal of coaching is to provide support until you know you’ve integrated the skills necessary to stay confidently on track over time.

What about other kinds of intervention – can REAL help with mediation or group issues?

Alternative dispute resolution can be part of a successful plan, but it cannot always be your own Conflict Coach who provides it.  You coach will support you through such interventions, but another “third party” REAL consultant is often necessary to allow all parties to consider the intervention specialist neutral or unbiased enough to allow for a fair and effective resolution.

Does coaching take the place of therapy?

Coaching is not a replacement for therapy. The goal of therapy is to understand deeply, diagnose, and address “why” something affects you. Whereas therapy helps to resolve “how did you get here?”, coaching answers “how might you move forward?” Coaching is focused on the present and future – and sometimes helps awareness for the need for therapy.

Clients need to be ready, willing and able to work with a coach. If problems with psychological issues are inhibiting daily or relationship functioning arise and are not treated, coaching will not be successful.  When coaching isn’t working for a project or client, both the client and coach should rightly address the issue by asking, “who or what is in the way?”  If the answer isn’t answered satisfactorily, alternative expertise and support are natural considerations and a therapist is one option that is always there.

Whereas the focus of therapy is resolving difficulties which hamper an individual’s emotional functioning in the present, improving overall psychological functioning, and dealing with present life and work circumstances in more emotionally healthy ways. Therapy outcomes often include improved emotional/feeling states. While positive feelings/emotions may be a natural outcome of coaching, the focus is on creating strategies for achieving specific goals in one’s work or personal life.

Does Conflict Coaching take the place of legal support?

Conflict coaching is not a replacement for legal advice. The goal of legal counsel is to support use of the whole of the legal system, which is complex.  A conflict coach wisely refers clients to legal support where issues lend themselves to options for use of legal advice.  In fact, coaching often works beautifully within a cohesive and integrated approach to resolving issues.  For example, collaborative family law is growing as an alternative to harsh litigations for families and couples who are separating.  Accounting and financial support is also of support in some cases – the range of professional support is rich, and conflict coaching is in no way limiting to a client’s benefiting from their support.
